We are excited to offer specialty contact lenses such as scleral contacts for conditions like keratoconus or post-surgical corneas. We also specialize in multifocal contact lenses, so if you’re tired of wearing those reading glasses, come see how we can help you feel and look younger!

Types of Contact Lenses

Rigid Gas-Permeable

Rigid gas-permeable lenses, also known as hard contacts, hold their shape when worn in the eye while allowing oxygen to flow through the lens. These lenses are particularly useful for individuals with corneal irregularities, like astigmatism or keratoconus.

Soft contact lenses are generally regarded as a more comfortable option and worn for various reasons. They are made from a malleable silicone hydrogel that forms to the eye and come in a range of options.

Types of soft contact lenses include:

  • Daily wear contacts are worn during the day and removed to sleep, shower, or swim.
  • Extended wear contacts are worn at all times, but should be removed once a week to disinfect.
  • Toric contacts are shaped a little differently than standard lenses and are helpful for individuals with astigmatism.

Specialty Contact Lenses

Scleral Lenses

Scleral lenses are larger-than-average gas-permeable contact lenses. They are large enough to vault over the cornea and rest on the sclera, or the whites of the eyes. These lenses are suitable for individuals with corneal irregularities or dry eye syndrome.

Orthokeratology, or ortho-k, uses specially designed contact lenses to temporarily reshape the cornea. Typically, these lenses are worn overnight to shape the surface of your eye while you sleep and are removed during the day. Comparable to orthodontics, the effects of the lenses are reversible but can be maintained with continuous wear.

Multifocal contact lenses have more than 1 prescription in each lens, usually for both distance and near vision. Multifocal lenses are typically worn for individuals with presbyopia and can be used as a method of myopia control.

Caring for Your Contact Lenses

If you don’t properly care for your contact lenses, you can risk a serious eye infection. It’s important that you follow appropriate lens care routines to keep your contacts clean and comfortable.

Contact lenses that don’t fit your eye can also cause discomfort and may even scratch your eye. Additionally, they can cause small blood vessels to grow into your cornea, threatening your vision.

Some types of artificial tears can cause problems with your contact lenses. If you use eye drops, please consult your optometrist first.

Some care and cleaning tips for your contact lenses include:

  • Following your doctor’s recommended wear schedule
  • Attending regular eye exams to monitor your lens wear
  • Not showering or swimming with your lenses in
  • Always washing your hands before handling your lenses
  • Never using saliva or water to store or wet your contacts
